What is a TALA licence and how do you check one?

What the licence actually tells you
A TALA licence shows the licensed company name, the class of activity permitted, and a validity period. It tells you the business exists formally and has met a threshold to trade.
It does not tell you the operator is good, solvent, or safe on the mountain. Treat it as a floor, not a recommendation.
How to check the certificate you were sent
Read the company name on the certificate and compare it, character for character, with the name on the quote and the bank account. Mismatches are the point of the check.
Check the expiry date. Licences lapse, and an expired certificate circulating as proof is a common shortcut.
Certificates are easy to edit in an image editor, so treat a PDF or photo as a claim, not proof. Confirm the details independently with the Tanzania Tourist Board or TATO before you pay.
What if no licence record can be found?
Absence of a public record is not the same as proof of wrongdoing. Registers can be incomplete or offline, and small operators sometimes trade under a parent company's licence.
The right response is a question, not an accusation: ask which entity holds the licence and get that name in writing. A real operator will tell you. If nobody will name the licence holder, stop.
